Abstract

The population increase has centered in cities worldwide. Higher population density results in urban planning policy challenges. The smart cities model has emerged as a viable model to higher urban population densities. The aim of this article is to evaluate actions that can drive the implementation of the smart cities model and contribute to Mexico’s sustainable development. The methodology is a theoretical-descriptive analysis of the implementation of the smart cities model regarding current regulations and government agendas in Mexico. Our results provide evidence that the smart cities model offers a new conceptual paradigm for cities that is not solely based on technical aspects and instead integrates the participation of multiple stakeholders that drive Mexico’s sustainable development nationwide.
