Challenges in sustainable innovation in the tourism sector

Abstract

Currently, there is a greater understanding about sustainability is, however, the transition to sustainable practices is a challenge for companies. This research was carried out from the organizational perspective, with a qualitative exploratory approach, analyzes sustainable innovation efforts developed by hotel companies in the tourism sector of Culiacan, Sinaloa, and the problems faced for their implementation; For that, information on sustainable certifications was analyzed and interviews were conducted with hotel managers. The findings show that the hotel sector understands the sustainability but does not implement it adequately, its innovation is limited, does not sufficiently embrace sustainability, due to economic reasons, motivation, as well as not including sustainability in its central strategy. It is concluded that it is necessary to review the policies of sustainability promotion, the need for greater business will, and the inclusion of research and development strategies.
